Why your child can do the homework but fails the test

The pattern

It goes like this. Homework gets done. You sit with them, or the tutor does, and it comes out right. Then the test comes back at 48% and nobody can explain it.

Almost every family who contacts us describes some version of this, and almost every family assumes the problem is effort or nerves. Usually it is neither.

Three things are being confused

What happens during homework and what happens in a test are not the same task, and three differences do most of the damage.

1. Performance is not learning

Getting it right while you are working on it measures short-term memory. Getting it right two weeks later measures learning. These come apart more than people expect, and the conditions that make practice feel easy usually make learning worse.

2. The scaffold is invisible

When you sit beside them you prompt without noticing. A raised eyebrow at the wrong step, a "are you sure?", a re-read of the question. Remove the scaffold and the performance goes with it. The child was not pretending; they genuinely could do it, with you there.

3. Homework is blocked, tests are mixed

Homework is usually twenty questions of the same type. You work out the method once and repeat it nineteen times. A test mixes question types, so the hard part is deciding which method applies. That decision was never practised.

What actually fixes it

Three things, and none of them is more homework.

• Delay the check. Test it a week later, on questions they have not seen. If it holds, it is learned. If it does not, it was never learned and now you know.
• Remove yourself. Ask them to explain it to you with the book shut. If the explanation is procedural, "you just flip it and times it", the understanding is not there yet.
• Mix the practice. Five questions from three different topics beats twenty from one. It feels worse and works better.

Why we built our method around this

This is the entire reason CAQA Academy exists. We do not mark a topic complete when the lesson goes well. We mark it complete when the learner explains it back unaided and then passes a check on new questions at least seven days later. That is the whole method, and you can see how we record it.
