Scholarship and selective entry

Selective entry and scholarship testing, taught as reasoning rather than as tricks.

Years 5 to 9 From $89 per session Online

What it covers

  • Verbal reasoning: analogies, vocabulary, logical relationships
  • Numerical reasoning: pattern, sequence and quantitative logic
  • Abstract and non-verbal reasoning
  • Reading comprehension under significant time pressure
  • Written expression to a prompt, planned in minutes
  • Pacing, and knowing when to leave a question

Who it is for

Learners sitting Victorian selective entry, independent school scholarship tests or academic-stream entry examinations.

Reasoning improves with real understanding, not with tricks. Pattern-matching shortcuts collapse the moment the real test varies the format, and it always does.

How it runs

Weekly small group, with timed practice built into the retrieval opener rather than bolted on at the end.

Descriptors we map

Every topic is tied to a named curriculum descriptor, and a descriptor only turns green once your learner teaches it back unaided and passes a check on new questions at least seven days later. A sample of what we map for this programme:

Sample curriculum descriptors

VerbalAnalogy, classification and logical relationships
NumericalSequence, pattern and quantitative reasoning
AbstractNon-verbal pattern and spatial reasoning
ComprehensionInference and evaluation at speed

Questions

Is coaching for selective entry fair?

It is common, which is not the same thing. We teach reasoning that is useful regardless of the test result, and we will tell you honestly if we think a learner is not suited to the pathway.

What if my child does not get in?

Then they have a year of properly taught reasoning and comprehension behind them, which is why we teach it this way.

How early should we start?

A year out is comfortable. Six weeks out is format familiarisation, not skill building, and we will say so.
