What NAPLAN actually measures, and what it does not

A calm look at a test that generates more anxiety than it deserves, and what to do with the result.

For parents 5 minute read

What it is

NAPLAN tests reading, writing, language conventions and numeracy in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It is a snapshot taken on one morning, in one room, in one mood.

What it measures well

  • Whether your child can read at the speed the year level assumes
  • Whether they can hold a piece of writing together under time pressure
  • Whether the numeracy fundamentals are automatic or still effortful
  • Where a cohort sits relative to the national picture

What it does not measure

  • How much your child has grown this year
  • Curiosity, persistence, or how they work with other people
  • Whether the teaching has been good
  • Anything at all about your child's worth

The 2025 picture

Roughly one in three Australian students sat below the proficiency benchmark in literacy or numeracy, and the number has barely moved across three cycles. That is a system-level result, not a verdict on any one child, and it is worth holding both of those thoughts at once.

What to do with the result

Do not frame it as a grade. Use it as a map. If reading is below benchmark, that will be affecting science and humanities too, and it is the first thing to fix. If numeracy is below, look for the earliest gap rather than the current topic.

And if the result is fine but school is still hard, believe the school, not the test. A snapshot can miss a lot.

Should you prepare?

A little. Format familiarity removes an unnecessary shock, and six weeks is plenty for that. Drilling past papers for a year does not build the underlying skill, and we will say so even though we sell a NAPLAN course. Here is what ours actually does.
